Suit Up and Show Up

In a meeting. Probably my 5000th meeting where they talk about the benefits of AA. Sometimes it gets boring. But if I dont sit through the boring meetings then I wont be sitting there when the guy who needs my help comes in. Or Ill miss seeing the profound effect of AA on the new peoples lives. I would also miss the moments of truth that open up my mind and heart to better things. My buddy used to talk about this meeting out in the country amongst a bunch of pig farmers. They would sit around week after week talkin about pig farming. But every now and then a new prson would walk in the door and those pig farmers would have an AA meeting. The AA book says something to the effect that we meet frequently so newcomers will be able to find us.

What is amazing to me is how Al-Anon has impacted other parts of my life that have nothing to do with son's addiction. Who knew being powerless was such a good thing. I'm looking for an open AA meeting, I want to hit a few of those.

If we are mindful and aware, we can find insights and ways to help others in need all around us. By living a good example, help ourselves, our families and our society as a whole.

I'm really glad there are meetings and people always there to help alcoholics and addicts in trouble, both newcomers and those who have lost their way and need support. But I hope those waiting in the rooms are there because they wish to be and not out of misplaced fear or guilt.
